Intense pulsed light (IPL) is a light therapy commonly used to erase sun damage, irregular pigmentation, brown spots, or freckles on the face, neck, or chest. At Eyesthetica, we have also had great success using IPL to treat two medical conditions: rosacea and meibomian gland dysfunction (a common underlying cause of dry eye). Read on as we explain how we can eliminate the frustrations associated with these disorders with IPL.

Rosacea

Intense pulsed light treatment is a safe and effective way to reduce the chronic redness and flushing associated with rosacea and dilated facial veins (telangiectasia). The pulses of light injure the blood vessels that contribute to the appearance of rosacea. This then stimulates the body’s natural response, which is to break down and remove the damaged tissue. As a result, the facial redness diminishes. The results of IPL for rosacea are more noticeable and longer-lasting than other treatment modalities like topical creams. Usually, a series of treatments is recommended for the best outcomes.

Meibomian Gland Dysfunction

The meibomian glands in the eyelids secrete oil onto the surface of the eye that prevents the tear layer from evaporating too quickly. Sometimes these glands become blocked or experience another type of problem, and the tears, therefore, lack the oily component they need. As a result, the tears evaporate too quickly from the surface of the eye and dry eye symptoms can occur. With IPL, the pulses of light liquefy and loosen hardened oil clogging the meibomian glands, and the oil can then be manually expressed. This process helps to stimulate healthy gland function so the tears can better moisturize the surface of the eyes. Although initial improvement can be seen after one or two treatments, most patients see long-term benefits from a series of about four treatments.
