The oculoplastic surgeons of Eyesthetica in Los Angeles primarily use the cosmetic injectable known as Botox for anti-aging purposes. (The neuromodulator works by relaxing the facial muscles that contract and form wrinkles and lines.) But some cosmetic practices are using Botox in a different way: facial slimming. Botox can be used to slim the lower face by relaxing large chewing muscles, which then shrink for a slimmer jawline. Read on to learn more.
Relaxing the Jaw Muscles
Botox won’t have any effect on excess fat that makes the face round or chubby. It only benefits those with prominent jaw muscles that give the lower face a square or broad shape. Botox can be injected into the masseter (jaw) muscle to temporarily relax it. As a result, the muscle gradually shrinks and the jawline appears slimmer and more angular.
As a complement to the slimmer jawline, dermal fillers can be injected into the cheekbone area in order to add more definition. This draws attention to the high points of the cheeks while downplaying the jaw area.
Traditionally, the only way to slim the lower face was through a surgical procedure like liposuction, which breaks up and removes excess fat. However, liposuction is invasive, costly and carries certain serious risks. It requires planning and recovery downtime. By comparison, Botox can be conveniently schedule on a lunch break. Treatment is short and not painful; anesthesia is not required but ice may be used to numb the injected area. There is virtually no recovery downtime after Botox and most patients resume their daily routine almost immediately (as long as they avoid strenuous activity for about 24 hours).
Keep in mind that the effects of Botox are temporary, and eventually the body absorbs the product and the jaw muscle starts working as normal. At that point, repeat treatment is needed. Patients tend to schedule Botox injections every three to six months to maintain the effects of treatment and enjoy a slimmer facial shape.
