Do you spend a lot of time in front of a mirror, lamenting the effects of aging on your eyes? Are you disappointed to find that your eyelids have started to droop and become saggy, taking attention away from your otherwise attractive face? The Los Angeles oculoplastic surgeons at Eyesthetica can help. In this blog post, we discuss the different ways that we can treat sagging lower eyelids and restore a more youthful appearance to the eyes.

Surgical Correction with Blepharoplasty

For permanent results, surgical correction is the best option. Surgically removing excess skin and tightening the remaining skin provides long-lasting, youthful results. The procedure to tighten and lift the lids is known as blepharoplasty or “eyelid lift”, and it is extremely common among aging adults. The procedure is performed on an outpatient basis and the recovery is typically short and well tolerated.

Laser Treatment

Another way to tighten skin, albeit without surgery, is through a laser or radiofrequency treatment. The heat generated by the laser or radiofrequency device gently warms the deep layers of the skin and triggers the production of collagen. With new collagen, the eyelid skin becomes smoother and firmer.

Dermal Fillers or Fat

Dermal fillers or autologous fat can be used to correct some cases of eyelid sagging or puffiness. The filler or fat is injected into the high points of the cheeks (right under the eyes) to elevate them to the level of the eyelids. This eliminates puffiness and creates a smooth transition from lid to cheek.

Botox

Botox does not technically tighten sagging lower eyelids but it can help give the illusion of more youthful looking eyes. Botox can be strategically injected into the eyebrow area to slightly elevate it. This reduces some of the excess skin covering the upper eyelid and lashline, and helps the eyes look more awake.
