Dr. Helen A. Merritt completed medical school at the University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston. She spent her transitional internship at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center in Austin where she trained in both internal medicine and general surgery. She returned to complete her ophthalmology residency at the University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston.  Dr. Merritt pursued an additional two years of specialized training in oculofacial plastic surgery at Eyesthetica and the USC Roski Eye Institute, one of the few prestigious American Society of Ophthalmic Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery (ASOPRS) fellowships and ranked among the top 10 ophthalmology training programs in the country.

 

Dr. Merritt has a passion for resident teaching in oculofacial and reconstructive management that stems from her long history of peer tutoring. She also contributes to the advancement of the field of ophthalmic plastic and reconstructive surgery by writing many peer-reviewed publications and presenting on topics ranging from orbital trauma to periocular cancers.  Dr. Merritt has received two prestigious research presentation awards including the Barry Uhr Memorial Prize in Ophthalmological Research. Additionally, Dr. Merritt advocates on a national level to Congress for patient safety and care issues in ophthalmology.

Dr. Merritt’s hobbies include bodyboarding and hiking. She is an instrumentalist and plays the cello, guitar, and banjo. She is a native Texan and fluent in Spanish.
