are you ready to look as
young as you feel with eyelid surgery?

Double Eyelid Surgery in Greater Los Angeles

Double eyelid surgery is a distinct type of blepharoplasty (formerly known as an “Asian blepharoplasty”) designed to enhance the eyelid contours. Often, the goal is to create a double eyelid fold or define an upper eyelid crease. These procedures are performed with careful techniques that create a subtle difference without significantly altering your appearance or identity. With successful surgery, your eyelids will blend harmoniously with your own facial features.

ARE YOU READY TO LOOK AS

YOUNG AS YOU FEEL?

Asian Eyelid Surgery/Double Eyelid Surgery

Asian eyelid surgery is a distinct type of blepharoplasty designed to enhance the eyelid contours in individuals of Asian descent. Asian eyelid surgery is not about “westernizing” the eyelid. Often, the goal is to create a double eyelid fold or define an upper eyelid crease. These procedures are performed with careful techniques that create a subtle difference without significantly altering your appearance or identity. With successful surgery, your eyelids will blend harmoniously with your own facial features.

What Makes Certain Patients Different?

Eyelids with an Asian-configuration refer to the varied eyelid shapes seen on people from the continent of Asia. Up to 50% of Hispanic people may have eyelids with this configuration as well. The Asian-configuration is due to unique anatomy that differs from Western eyelids in many ways. The upper eyelid may have a full crease, partial crease, or no crease due to differences in position of the upper eyelid skin, muscle, and fat.

This unique eyelid anatomy can also affect the eyelash position in some people. If the lashes turn inwards and scratch the delicate surface of the eye, this can cause pain, tearing, light sensitivity, a gritty sensation, or even permanent damage to your vision. In others, there may be a pronounced fold in the inner corner of the eye that can also be bothersome. The planning for surgery is based on your individualized facial anatomy and preference for the final outcome.

What is Double Eyelid Surgery?

In Double Eyelid Surgery, a “single” eyelid (an upper eyelid without a crease, or with multiple creases) is changed to a “double fold” eyelid with a well-defined crease. During the procedure, skin and fat are excised from the upper eyelid. Additionally, a small strip of the muscle is sculpted to help form the new crease. The incision is then closed with precise placement of sutures to position and stabilize the eyelid fold. The scars are hidden in the new fold!

Eyesthetica Doctors

How Do the Doctors at Eyesthetica Approach Double Eyelid Surgery?

Our doctors at Eyesthetica are aware that there is not a standardized approach to double eyelid surgery, because no two people have the exact same anatomy. Before surgery, our doctors examine your eyelids carefully to document the presence of a crease, crease asymmetry between sides, segmented creases, or multiple creases as this is important to surgical planning. Our doctors are aware that the Asian ideal aesthetic may be different from Western ideals. Some of our doctors have spent time training in Seoul, South Korea, to work on perfecting the latest techniques that may fit your aesthetic ideal. Our doctors believe in customizing minimally-invasive techniques to your specific goals and aesthetic preferences.

Double Eyelid Surgery and Recovery

Double eyelid surgery is an outpatient surgery that allows you to return home on the same day of surgery. Surgery is approximately 1-2 hours. Sutures are removed at approximately 5-7 days. Scars are hidden such that they are invisible to the naked eye after healing is complete.

Cold compresses are helpful for preventing bruising and swelling. For the first few weeks, there may be temporary changes in your eyesight, sensitivity to light, and tearing, but normal activities can usually be resumed within a few days of surgery. Be sure to visit our “What to Expect” section to learn more about planning for your surgery!
