What is Oculofacial Plastic Surgery?

When choosing a surgeon for cosmetic eyelid, facial, lacrimal or orbital surgery, it is important to consider the physician's training. Oculofacial Plastic Surgery (also known as Ophthalmic Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, Oculoplastic Surgery) is a specialized area of ophthalmology that focuses on cosmetic and reconstructive aspects of the eyelids, lacrimal (tear) system, the orbit (the bony cavity surrounding the eye), and the adjacent face. An oculofacial plastic surgeon has spent 6 years in the training of eyes and eyelids which is more time and more specialized eyelid work than any other type of cosmetic surgeon. When you consult with an Oculofacial Plastic Surgeon, you a consulting with a true eyelid expert.

What is the American Society of Ophthalmic Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery (ASOPRS)?

The main organizing body for Oculofacial Plastic Surgery is the American Society of Ophthalmic Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery (ASOPRS). ASOPRS members must complete an approved fellowship training program. About 20 surgeons are trained each year in this field. These surgeons are meticulously trained in cosmetic and reconstructive eyelid and facial surgery during their 2 year fellowships. Furthermore, ASOPRS members must pass a written and oral examination and write scientific thesis of original research.  Only after all of these steps have been completed is a surgeon asked to become a member of ASOPRS.

All of the doctors of Eyesthetica, Dr. Dresner, Dr. Burnstine, and Dr. Erb, are full members of ASOPRS, having completed all of these requirements. Around the world, there are approximately 500 such members who have passed these rigid criteria for certification. Visit ASOPRS online.
