Are under-eye bags giving your face a tired or frazzled-looking appearance? Does it frustrate you to spend money on high-end concealers that camouflage little (if any) of your bags? It might be time to see our oculoplastic and cosmetic surgery group in Los Angeles to explore your treatment options.

What Causes Under-Eye Bags?

The area beneath the lower lids naturally has small pads of fat. With age, the skin in that area can start to thin and the fat pads can start to sag and bulge outward. This creates the appearance of puffy bags, or what some people describe as tiny half-moons under the eyes.

Eating foods high in sodium, drinking, smoking, and lack of quality sleep can exacerbate the bags. Sometimes hormonal imbalances or genetic factors are to blame. No matter what causes the under-eye bags, there are a few ways to fix the problem.

Injectable Fillers

Injectable fillers are a minimally invasive, non-surgical way to smooth out bags so they are less noticeable. Our doctors can inject small amounts of products like Restylane or Juvederm along the borders of the bags to smooth out the transition between upper cheek and lower eyelid. These products are formulated with hyaluronic acid, a naturally occurring substance that adds volume and fullness to the treated area. Think of Juvederm or Restylane as a cushioning agent that plumps and nourishes the area beneath the eyes.

Dermal fillers may not completely eliminate the appearance of the bags, but they should look much fainter. Applying a good concealer product can make the bags nearly invisible.

The results of dermal filler treatment last about 9 to 12 months. At that time, repeat treatment is necessary to maintain the effects.

Blepharoplasty

Sometimes dermal fillers are not enough to fix under-eye bags. Another option is blepharoplasty or cosmetic eyelid surgery to more permanently rejuvenate the lower eyelid area. During the procedure, the surgeon removes the fat pads or redistributes the fat to minimize puffy bags. We are careful to preserve volume where possible and avoid removing too much fat or tissue; this helps to create a naturally youthful-looking result without hollowing out the eye area.

Blepharoplasty can be performed through an incision just below the lower lash-line or inside the lower eyelid.
